Restaurant Review: Valcano Steak & Sushi in Kennesaw, GA

So there’s a new (well fairly new) kid in town called the Kennesaw Marketplace. It’s located on the corner of Barrett Pkwy and Hwy 41 and has been in development over the past year or so. Whole Foods (scheduled to open later this year) is the anchor store, but the plaza includes stores like Hobby Lobby, Academy Sports, and many others. Every month a new place opens and several of these places are restaurants. Some are the usual suspects like Newks and Panda Express, however there are a few that aren’t chain restaurants or only have a couple of locations. I visited one of the restaurants today, Valcano Steak & Sushi.

When you walk in, the decor is not what you would normally expect from the typical sushi restaurant. It has a chic yet hip vibe that instantly heightened my already good mood. The hostess gave me a choice of a dine in table, hibachi seating, or sushi bar seating. They also have a small outdoor dining space. I chose sushi bar because I like to be right in the action with the sushi chefs! As I was seated by my delightful waitress, I couldn’t help but find myself grooving to the eclectic mix of music they were playing. I even caught my sushi chef bopping along and without even noticing it at first, I was tapping my foot to the beat as I read over the menu. I was greeted at the sushi bar to two friendly chefs named David and Santo! These guys were super professional yet really fun at the same time. They made my visit here quite enjoyable.

The sushi menu here is quite extensive. They even have a special section for those who don’t like “raw stuff” as they put it. You can also get bento boxes, tempura, fried rice or noodle bowls, a full drink bar, and several other offerings. They have a hibachi section and boy I tell you, those folks over in that section sounded like they were having a heck of a good time!

After perusing the menu, I settled on the Bubba Gump roll, spicy scallop nigiri, as well as the spicy yellow tail nigiri. Be sure to ask the chef or your server about the Catch of the Day specials, each created by the Volcano chefs. That’s how I found out about the Bubba Gump because it wasn’t on the menu. I have to say that I was more than pleased with all of my choices. The sushi was super fresh, the chef’s “special sauce” was super flavorful, and might I add that they make quite a decent martini!

The manager told me that they have been open for about five months now. If you can’t swing by, they offer deliver service through Grubhub. I went at lunch time around 12:30, on a Friday, and it was pretty packed – which is a good sign.

All in all, I definitely give this place a “Delightful Stamp of Approval” and will probably be visiting on a regular basis for some yummy sushi and to also try out the noodle and rice bowls.
